Dairy Farmers of America opens New Plant in Western Pennsylvania Dairy Farmers of Americas new whey products plant, located adjacent to D.F.A.s Farmers Cheese plant in New Wilmington, PA officially opened for business recently. The expansion was completed in August as part of a joint effort of the strategic alliance between D.F.A. and DMV USA, LaCrosse, WI. The new facility will convert whey into high-value ingredients for a broad range of industrial and food products. The facility is located next to Farmers Cheese, one of the largest single-site Italian cheese manufacturers and suppliers of whey solids in the United States. The expansion will allow the company almost to double the 36 million lbs. of whey powder currently produced annually at the plant. As part of its research on more refined products, D.F.A. is planning to produce a premium demineralized whey powder at the facility that meets domestic and international requirements. The project includes new technology for electrodialysis (mineral salt removal) and high concentration and crystallization of whey. The creation of the demineralized whey project became possible through D.F.A.s relationship with DMV USA. D.F.A. supplies high-quality raw products and facilities, while DMV brings research and development as well as access to worldwide markets. D.F.A. is a dairy marketing cooperative that markets milk for 22,000 dairy farmer members in 43 states. DMV USA is a division of DMV International of Veghel, The Netherlands, which is part of Campina Melkunie, one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the European Community.
