ICELAND SEAFOOD CORPORATION

Iceland Seafood Corporation recently completed the construction of their new 150,000 square feet manufacturing plant in Newport News, Virginia. This completely new facility has taken the place of their former Camp Hill, PA facility. This well known seafood provider is a subsidiary of Iceland Seafood International plc, headquartered in Iceland. Iceland Seafood Corporation had been developing plans for its new plant so that it can most effectively serve its customers. Acquisition of the new 25 acre site was facilitated by the Virginia Economic Development Authority and the City of Newport News

WEBBER/SMITH Associates, Inc. of Lancaster, PA received the initial layout from Iceland Seafood Corporation, refined it, and completed the facility design in time for the successful July 1997 completion of construction. The successful plant startup followed in September. The Virginia Economic Development Agency and the City of Newport News were also integral to the site selection and project creation.

A dramatic increase in production capacity will permit Iceland Seafood Corporation to meet the growing needs of their customers. Changing regulations in seafood handling lead to new operational aspects that were more easily accommodated in a new facility. The new building is situated on a densely wooded site in the Oakland Industrial Park. Strategic placement of the building footprint saved many mature trees. An elevated visitor’s corridor was constructed so that facility tours can be given without having visitors come into direct contact with the product or even enter the manufacturing environment. Tubular steel shapes were selected for columns to enhance cleanability.

A unique entrance canopy, signage and building form reinforced the nature of the customer’s strategic business plans. Office and production staff are closely oriented in work areas that permit the efficient use of support spaces. An efficient office layout utilizing modular components allows interaction between different management groups previously located on remote floors.

Building designed to exceed existing sanitation and food processing/handling regulations. Building, systems, and components designed to meet existing stringent red meat USDA requirements and anticipated FDA/USDA/future requirements.
